Overview
If you've built a project directly in GUIDE 2.0 instead of starting in the Template Builder, you don't have to recreate that work from scratch.
The Save as Template feature allows you to convert existing project components, including Phases, Milestones, Tasks, and Subtasks, into reusable templates that can be added to your Template Library and used in future project templates.
This is a great way to standardize successful onboarding workflows, reduce manual work, and quickly build new project templates from proven project plans.
What Can Be Templatized?
You can save the following project components as templates:
Project Phases
Milestones
Tasks
Subtasks
Once saved, these templates are stored in your Template Library, where they can be reused across future projects and templates.
How to Save a Project Component as a Template
Open the project containing the item you'd like to reuse.
Hover over the Phase, Milestone, Task, or Subtask.
Click the three-dot (⋮) menu.
Select Save as Template.
Your new template will now appear in the Template Library and can be inserted into future templates.
Creating a Project Template from a Phase Template
If you've saved an entire project phase and want to use it as the foundation of a new project template:
Navigate to Templates.
Select Create Project Template.
Choose your saved Phase Template.
Save the Project Template.
Your new Project Template is now available in the Template Library and can be used to create future projects.
Best Practices
Rename items before saving them as templates. This helps avoid duplicate template names and makes your library easier to manage.
Save complete, validated workflows. Only templatize project components that represent your organization's current best practices.
Use descriptive names. Include the workflow or department in the template name (for example, Enterprise Kickoff Phase or Customer Training Tasks).
Review templates periodically. Update templates as your onboarding process evolves to keep future projects consistent.
FAQs
Does saving something as a template remove it from my current project?
No. Saving a component as a template creates a reusable copy. Your existing project remains unchanged.
Where are saved templates stored?
All saved templates are available in the Template Library, where they can be reused when building new templates.
Can I edit a template after saving it?
Yes. Once it's in the Template Library, you can modify the template as needed without affecting the original project it was created from.
Can I create a full Project Template from an existing project?
Yes. If you've saved the project's phase(s) as Phase Templates, you can create a new Project Template and add those phases to build a complete reusable project.
When should I use this feature?
Templatizing is especially useful when:
You built a successful project before using the Template Builder.
You want to standardize a repeatable onboarding process.
You have common phases or task groups that are reused across multiple projects.
Tip: If you've invested time building a successful onboarding project, save it as a template so your team can reuse that work instead of rebuilding it each time.
